SYSTEM OF EDUCATION IN RUSSIA.
Citizens of Russia have always shown a great concern for education. The right to education is guaranteed by the Constitution of the Russian Federation. It is insured by the broad development of compulsory secondary education, by the development of extramural, correspondence and evening courses, by the provisions of state scholarships, grants and privileges for students.
In our country there is a nine-year compulsory education, but if you want to enter any higher education you have to study two years more.
School starts at the age of six; most children attend kindergartens, which are now a part of primary school. This stage of learning lasts for 3 or 4 years. Children have many subjects on the timetable: Russian, Reading, English, Maths, Nature Study, P.E., Drawing and Music. Secondary stage begins from the 5th form where the children have a lot of new subjects as Literature, History, Natural Science, Algebra and Geometry. Primary and secondary schools together comprise eleven years of study. Every school has a "core curt column" of academic study.
Some people think that school years are the happiest in their life. As for me, I cannot say whether it is right or wrong. I'm still too young. I am 15 years old, and it is difficult for me to say whether my future will be more happy than my past. Moreover, school takes so much time that I hardly have time for anything else.
School years may certainly be fairly happy. However, there are a lot of problems even today connected with school^ life and the formation of a personality. People think differently about this time of their life experience. In my opinion optimism or pessimism in the attitude to school years is equally wrong. School is the place where almost everything happens with a person for the first time. School years are the time of great expectations and great emotions. Not all emotions are always pleasant. School is the first true experience of the real life. At school a person makes his first friends, meets his first love, and confronts the first betrayal. Here at school the person reads the first books and writes the first composition. He acquires basic knowledge of Physics, Mathematics, Literature, History, Biology, etc.
School plays a very important social role. It provides high-quality education for pupils between The ages of 6 and 17. It brings together children with different interests and experience. School offers pupils the opportunities to develop their abilities, satisfy their curiosity, and realize themselves as individuals. At school pupils are taught to be responsible, gallant, and honest.
Examinations are taken at the end of the 9th form and the 11th year. After passing their school-leaving exams at the age 16 or 17, young people receive a Certificate of Secondary Education.
Some children after finishing the 9th form can go to a vocational or technical secondary schools or colleges, where they can be offered programmes, of academic subjects and a programme of training in a technical field, or a profession.
After finishing the 11th form of a secondary school, a lyceum or gymnasiums can go on in higher education. Among higher educational institutions there are universities, institutions, academics and schools of higher education, where the course of studies is normally 5 years.
Now I'd like to tell you a few words about my school. I am a country person and I have the right to get my education which is guaranteed by the Constitution of our country and ensured by the broad development of compulsory secondary education, vocational specialized secondary and higher education.
I started school at the age of seven. It was an ordinary secondary school. It was a specialized English school, and our English classes started in the second form.
My school is located in the centre of our village Set up before World War II, it values its traditions, which, however, have changed in the course of time. When I started to go to school it was a new building with a garden around it. Every year on the first of September all the pupils and teachers of our school gather in the forecourt for a meeting at which the beginning of a new academic year is proclaimed. After the meeting the pupils go to their classrooms. The classrooms are very large. In our school there are four nine specialised classrooms. There is a Biology classroom with a lot of flowers and two exotic trees. By taking care of the flowers and trees we learn to love and protect nature. This is the Literature classroom. It resembles a library with a lot of bookcases around the walls and the portraits of the classics of Russian literature. There are maps and archaeological artefacts in this classroom. I like History because it tells us about the events of the past. Most of all I liked the English classroom. On the wall of the English classroom there are posters with London places of interest: Westminster Abbey, Houses of Parliament, and the Tower of London. There are some portraits of the British and American writers such as Shakespeare, Byron,
I spend much time at school. But at school we do not only study. We have some extracurricular activities as well. They are part of school life. Our social and cultural life is well organised. We have different clubs. We often go to the museums. At school I have many interesting subjects and they are all different. My favourite subjects are English, English literature and History. I like to lean new English words, dramatise texts and dialogues. I like to discuss interesting problems in English during our English classes. Everything that is connected with Great Britain is very important to me. I like my classmates, and we always spend our time together.
Our school has been recently rebuilt. Now it is modern three-storied building. On the ground floor one can find administrative offices, a gym and a cloakroom. On the ground floor there are primary school classes. Teenagers are not allowed to spend time on the ground floor, because primary school pupils are too small. On the other floors are different classrooms.
Many people associate computers with the world of science and maths, but they are also a great help to scholars in other subjects, in history, literature and so on. In the library it is no possible for a scholar to find a book or article he needs very quickly, which, when a million or more new books are published each year, is quite an advantage. There is a system, controlled by a computer, of giving books a code number, reducing them in size by putting them on microfiche, and then storing 3.000 or more in a container no bigger than a washing machine. You tell the computer which subject you are interested in and it produces any microfiche you need in seconds. There are also systems to translate articles from foreign magazines by computer. So computers can help us to many ways.
Our classroom is on the second floor, it is the 41st study, find our form-mistress is a teacher of Biology. We respect her very much; she is a kind, strong and a person with a sense humor. She teachers us biology and is so fond of her subject. There are many different flowers in our classroom.
The school has doors that open wide,
And friendly teachers wait inside.
Hurry, hurry, let's go in,
Tor soon the lessons will begin.
Books and pencils I will need,
When I start to write and read.
Lots to learn and lots to do
I Like to go to school, don't you?
The happiest days of your whole life!
(So all the grown-ups say),
But I would never go to school
If I could have my way.
My pencil point is broken,
My pen's run out ink.
My head’s just filled with sawdust
And with sawdust you can't think.
My books are in dreadful state

After the meeting the pupils go to their classroom. The classrooms are very large. At school we have classes in Russian, Literature, Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, English, History, Computer Programming. There are four specialized classrooms in our school.
We also have P.E.,Physical training, because it is an important subject in our school. Pupils have got P.E. lessons 3 times a week. Boys and girls play volley-ball and basket-ball at the lesson. There is a sports ground near our school and school-children go in for sports in the open air.
Our school is a three-storeyed building. On the ground floor there are administrative offices and workshops. On the first floor there are large assembly halls, classes for our primary school, physics and chemistry studies and a medicine room.
But I wasn’t very good at physics. I always fail to learn formula and terms properly. Maybe our teacher is too serious, too academic.
On the second floor there is a Biology lab and Mathematics, Literature ones. The Biology classroom is very large, with a lot of flowers and two exotic trees. Our classteacher is a teacher of Biology. Her name is S. V.Hodoreva. We usually take care of the flowers and trees, and then we learn how to love and protect nature.
I spend much time at school But we don 4 only stud at school. After classes I usually don’t tgo home right away. We have some out-of-class activities. Out social and cultural life is well-organized. For example, we have an Art club, a Dancing club and a Chess club. I take part in the Drama club.
I like my class. I always feel at home here. Everybody is so friendly and easy to get along with. I am on good terms with my classmates and we often spend our free time together. We often go out together. I’m sure that they will be ready to enter our society as full-fledged citizens.
