Buckingham Palace is the Royal residence. It was built in 1703 by the Duke of Buckingham. It is now the official home of Queen Elizabeth and the British Royal Family. There are nearly six hundred rooms in the palace and three miles of red carpet. Buckingham Palace is like a small town, with police station, 2 post offices, a hospital, a bar, 2 sport clubs, a disco, a cinema and a swimming pool. About 700 people work for the palace.
Westminster Abbeyis a symbol of England. It is a royal church; it was built in the 11th century. The coronation of all British Kings and Queens takes place in Westminster Abbey. Some famous English people are buried here: Newton, Darwin and Kipling.
Big Benis the name of the huge clock in one of the tall towers of the Houses of Parliament. It doesn`t look very big, but its minute hand is as a double-decker bus. People are allowed to get inside the Tower so that they can see the works of Big Ben. There is no lift and there are three hundred and forty steps up to Big Ben.
The National Galleryhas a collection of Italian, Dutch, German and French pictures. The National Gallery is rich in painting by Italian masters. It has pictures of all European schools of art such as works by Rembrandt, Rubens. The gallery is open seven days a week and admission is free.
Tate Galleryopened in 1897 and is named after Sir Henry Tate, who donated his collection of 65 paintings to the nation. Now it is the National Gallery of Modern Painting. There is a large collection of European 20th century art there.
The Tower of Londonis a very old building it is more than 900 years old. English kings lived in it many years ago, but now it is a museum. It was a fortress, a royal palace and later a prison. The ravens are another famous sign. The legend says that without them the Tower will fall.
I want to tell you about Tower Bridge. Tower Bridge was opened in 1894. It takes its name from the Tower of London. The hydraulic mechanism can raise and lower the bridge in about one and a half minutes. The covered walkway between the two towers is opened to the public and offers a spectacular view of London.
