Приветствие. Оргмомент.

Good morning! Sit down, please. I’m very glad to see you again. How are you today?

The last lesson we were speaking about celebrations in different countries and activities on the celebration days. Постановка цели: Today we are going to continue speaking about the celebrations in different countries and special food for the celebration days.

Let’s remember the countries we were speaking about the last lesson. I will show you the flags and we will speak about them, ok? Which celebrations in this country do you remember? Which season is it held?

Great! You are right. But now I want you to tell me the things they usually do on the celebrations day! Just look at the blackboard and say.

  1. Dress                        a) bonfires
  2. Have                        b) the house
  3. Light                        c) special food
  4. Decorate                  d) a family dinner
  5. Have                        e) have gifts
  6. Set off                      f) street parades
  7. Exchange                 g) up
  8. Cook                        h) fireworks

Okay, that’s very good. You say that they usually cook special food. But to cook food we need some ingredients, yes? Let us look at some ingredients of the food and translate it!

Eggs                    Salt

Cranberry            Pepper

Potatoes              Tomatoes

Turkey                 Carrots

Flour                   Pineapples

Bananas              Sausages

Milk                     Sugar

Water                   Lemons

Rice                     Oil

Perfect! Now let us go back to celebrations. Can you name some Russian celebration days? Very good. One of interesting celebrations is Maslenitsa. Let us say what we usually do on this day. Yes. We cook special food. But what do we do? Yes, it is PANCAKES! But what do we need to cook pancakes? Let us make a list of ingredients for pancakes:

Eggs           Milk

Flour          Salt

Sugar          Oil

But how many ingredients do we need? We can say two eggs, but we can’t say two flours. Why? Because we can’t count it!  So we can say that some ingredients we can count, but some of them are uncountable. Let us tick the countable ingredients and cross the uncountable ones. Choose 4 of them and write:

V  Eggs                ×  Salt
V  Cranberry       ×  Pepper
V  Potatoes          ×  Tomatoes
V  Turkey            ×  Carrots
×  Flour               V  Pineapples
V Bananas           V  Sausages
×  Milk                 ×  Sugar
×  Water              V  Lemons
×  Rice                 ×  Oil

There are special rules for countable and uncountable ingredients. We can use articles (артикли) and some (немного) with the ingredients. Let’s look at the rules:

For countables we use:
A / an:
a biscuit
an apple

Some / number:
some bananas
four bananas

For uncountables we use:
Some:
some
milk

Now let’s put a/an or some near the ingredients. Choose 4 of these ingredients and write them down:

An / some egg(s)                     some salt

A / some cranberry(ies)          some pepper

A / some potato(es)                a / some tomato(es)

A / some turkey                     a / some carrots

Some flour                             a / some pineapples

A / some banana(s)                a / some sausage(s)

Some milk                              some sugar

Some water                            a / some lemon(s)

Some rice                               some oil

Let’s go back to pancakes. How many or how much ingredients do we need to cook pancakes?

Some (3-4) eggs

Some (2 glasses of) flour

Some (1 l. of) milk

Some (2 spoons of) sugar

Some (1 spoon of) oil

Thank you, now I’ll give you the pieces of paper and you are going to make a dialogue. Come here and take the task. Who’ll be the first? Ready? Let us check!

Shop assistant: Good morning! How can I help you?
Customer: I want to buy the ingredients for pancakes.
Shop assistant: Here are flour and eggs. Do you need special oil?
Customer: No, just simple oil, please.
Shop assistant: Do you need some salt or sugar?
Customer: Yes, I need a kilo of sugar.
Shop assistant: Here you are. Is that all?
Customer: No, I need milk, too.
Shop assistant: Oh, milk! Here you are.
Customer: Thank you. How much is it?
Shop assistant: That’s $10.
Customer: Here you are. Good bye!
Shop assistant: Thank you! Have a nice day!

Now let’s make your own dialogues. You need to buy the ingredients for: sandwiches, biscuits, rice with vegetables. You are welcome! Thank you for your work, your dialogues were interesting!

It’s time to write down your hometask: WB p.59 ex. 3, 4. You have to put the articles a / an  or some where necessary and put ‘c’ for countables and ‘u’ for uncountables.

Дополнительное задание на случай, если осталось время:

  1. I need … vegetables. Can you buy them in the shop?
  2. There is … tomato in the fridge. You can use it to make a salad.
